Melanoma skin cancer accounts for about 3% of all new cancer cases. While melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, it represents only about 1.4% of all cancer deaths because of the good prognosis resulting from early detection.

Melanoma is the most dangerous and deadly type of skin cancer. Even though it is the least common type, it is responsible for most deaths from skin cancer. It can develop on any part of the body, however, the arms, legs, and trunk are the most common area of the body.

Skin cancer is common overall, but the life-threatening kind is not. There are three general types of skin cancer: basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma. Only melanoma, which accounts for about 6% of skin-cancer cases, is fatal. Statistics show skin cancer is responsible for less than 2% of cancer deaths.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. In 2018, it is estimated that more than 90,000 people will be diagnosed with and 9,000 will die from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
